Frontal Hair Loss

For men, the fear of going bald begins with a receding hairline. Ninety-five percent of receding hairline and hair loss in men is due to genetics; this type of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern baldness. Men may experience hair loss as early as their teens or early twenties. The typical pattern of this type of alopecia begins at the hairline as hair loss progresses from the temple and the forehead, gradually forming a receding hairline, also known as frontal hair loss. The hairline gradually recedes to form an “M” shape while the rest of the hair becomes thinner and shorter.
The most common causes of frontal hair loss are genetic predisposition and certain hormonal influences. Hair loss begins when the genetically predisposed hair follicles are exposed to the harmful influences of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) — the by-product of the male hormone testosterone and the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. DHT attacks the hair follicles and blocks it from receiving nourishment from the scalp circulation. As a result, the diameter of hair decreases, producing thinner hairs until these hairs eventually fall out.

Female hair loss is unlikely to result in a receding hairline. It typically manifests as overall thinning of the hair on the scalp which usually occurs with chronological age. Women usually experience noticeable thinning in their 40’s or later. Hair loss in women has numerous causes but the most common ones may be brought about by certain medical conditions and changing hormone levels especially during menopause and pregnancy. Women become susceptible to the harmful effects of DHT when the level of their hormone estrogen decreases. One of the functions of this female hormone is to promote hair growth. For as long as the level of estrogen is normal, DHT cannot flood to the hair follicles and the risk for female pattern baldness is significantly lower.
When it comes to treating a receding hairline and thinning hair, there are countless solutions, and modern medicine has come up with hair loss treatments to stop hair loss, delay its onset or prevent it from recurring. No doubt that out from the unlimited treatment options, the best one is always the one that makes us comfortable in our own skin. Nevertheless, we need to examine the possibilities and weigh our options in order to find one that works.

The Crucial Three
There are three steps to prevent a receding hairline from advancing:
1st: One must understand its causal factors to be a step ahead in overcoming it.
2nd: Take the necessary precautions on hair care practices and realize that hair is actually a privilege, (and sadly) not a right.
3rd: Consult a healthcare provider on the first signs of hair loss for a timely and prompt treatment.

Here are some of the most effective treatment options:

Strategic Cuts

The easiest way to deal with a receding hairline is to work with whatever little hair you have left. For what it’s worth, a hairstylist can help you come up with a haircut that will lessen the appearance of mature hairline and create the illusion of a thicker head of hair. Try having longer front bangs to cover up the thinning hair or layering to make an otherwise receding hairline look fuller and thicker.

Medications

Minoxidil is a topical lotion for hair regrowth. Finasteride is an anti-androgen agent. Continued usage of both drugs is imperative in order to maintain positive results; otherwise, if usage is stopped, hair will regress to its untreated state. Certain side effects also accompany prolonged usage of these drugs. Minoxidil may cause skin and scalp irritation, whereas finasteride may decrease one’s desire for sex. Both drugs should, however, be used with a doctor’s advice.

Surgical Procedures

Anyone who contemplates such option should carefully consider the risks that usually go with the expected outcomes as well as the cost of the procedure. One surgical option for a receding hairline is the transplantation of hair follicles from the back of the head (resistant to DHT) to the frontal and temple areas, also called hair grafting. With the new hair follicles, a receding hairline will no longer worsen into baldness.

There are also flap procedures and scalp reductions that provide realistic solutions to a receding hairline and bald spots. Flap procedure is surgically moving a flap of hair-growing scalp from point A to point B with the benefit of naturally growing hair where there used to be none, although with the setbacks. In scalp reductions, bald areas of the scalp are surgically removed, and then the scalp part which has hair is stretched over these areas to cover the lost part and offset the difference. This invasive procedure should only be pursued under the management and skills of a highly reputable surgeon.
